(Below you can read English)

A cubierta.

Me sorprendió otra cosa.

“¿Me ayudas?” Dice Aude.

A Mik.

Gracias a ti, María Climent

The classics or Moonbeam IV

“The second is the first to lose”. When I heard France say that, I knew that it is not the same sailing on a classic yacht as it is to sail on the Moonbeam IV. Just finished the last day of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona and a fight between the contrescota of the jiptop and the greater sprit (thanks Diana, for the explanation) we had lost a first place that we had tasted during part of the race that was to decide the final result.

Second place is not worth for a winning boat. And a winning boat can only have an ambitious and feisty crew. Just like France.
First lesson learned. “Your majesty, there is no second place.” Nothing to comply.

I can’t say for sure if it is not like this onboard all the classic yachts but no-one misses that this boat is different. Here they respect protocol, aesthetics, good manners and customs in a very special way.

They cover their heads to enter and leave the port. The bodies, that goes without saying. But not in any way. Suits of rough fabric and neckerchief. Whites, hard work. All marked with the large number 8 that reminds you, like the infinite number, the Moonbeam IV aspires to eternity.

It is such a strong scene that it needs a bang of reality to return to earth. To cover. The present. Very friendly, very french (in the best sense of courtesy and exquisiteness) and smiling a lot, yes… but safety first and in this Mik does not leave room for error. “Ass in the ground”, statement. Would you need more?

When they were handing out duties, with me, little more than 1,60m, I got the jib, with June at the wheel. Small, blonde, smiley and fun. Like her sail. Pizpirela. Very Young too, soo much that I was almost surprised by her professionality and efficiency. My June explained to us, from where, when (that, of course, it was when she said) and how we had pull. “Even though I’ll fall in the water trying”, you’re thinking. You don’t appear wild, these sails have power.

I literally saw with my own eyes, Cristina flying a few times and I lost count of how many times I fell myself. “Ass on the ground”. Wow both times.
Despite everything, the little injuries and bruises were worth the trouble. You really feel like you are part of something big. From the grandiose captains helm. From the wisdom of Jordi and Pieree. From the ability of Guillaume and Christian, sailors and acrobats. From the combined strength of a crew you barely can see from the bow but you know that it’s there, so necessary is their energy to control the giant.

Them

Another thing surprised me. For them, for Mik, Nuoffer Pierre-alexandre, Christian, Aude Acr, Samuel Legrand and the two Guillaumes (Guillaume Ragot). For France and June Juni. For Diana, Natalia, Jordi and Cristina Trujillano. Each regatta is different. Not because they change the conditions, this you get by feeling. If not because in each port, almost in each test, the half of the crew is new. Frequently with a novice like me.

Maybe they don’t see it like this, but with the evidence to prove otherwise that this supposes, it gives me the impression that, at the bottom, it also presents some advantages (I recognise that maybe not many) if you have an adventurous spirit. The challenge of leading a virgin troop into battle. The grace of the unknown. Not knowing how the litter will react

And it’s not that easy, even less on a boat like this. They can’t tell you to pull the red rope, because there are no colours on the Moonbeam IV. The cannot be certain that you understand them speaking in their perfect French when you answer in your perfect Spanish or in the wide range of “Englishes” spoken on the boat.

Later, when everything finished, there was only them left. Same as always. To pick up the sails and give the boat their care and attention. “Will you help me? Aude said. You see her as small as you. Even more delicate. You think, if she can, you can. I don’t know how many times I was amazed by the strength and skill of such small bodies. It’s when you grit your teeth and try you don’t notice that you’re out of breath until the third pull.

It’s like that in every sense. I confirm that when they announced the winner and gave out the prizes the crew burst into applause. They made a passage of honour for the winner, her big brother, the Moonbeam III, and celebrated her victory from their hearts. To my eyes, this made them even bigger.

There are no small people on board the 8. There is no second that is worth it.

Whatever happens, at the end, there are always The Tutsies. To give it everything. To make it clear that the regattas are a lot of sea but also, a lot of life. But of course, this is already a regatta on the ground and in that, it isn’t my first time.

Good wind

PS. As Luis likes to give me a blank cheque, I took the liberty of including a few thanks.

The first, to the captain, to Mikael Créac'h. For letting me live his boat and to all of his crew. You are exquisite, truly.
I’m sorry I had to write about your (our) coming second, feeling as you all do, champions by nature. And sorry one more time if I wrote your names wrong!

The second thanks go to all of my Friends who for a long time you have shown me how to enjoy the sea and sailing. If I am appreciating this experience how it is supposed to be it is because of you. Between them, how could I forget, especially Diana Gonzalez Gandia, my warrior, who was born in a locker and opened all of my hatches.

The third, to Natalia Diaz. She opened her home and made me feel like I was in my own. I am certainly that you will do very well.

And the last is to, another time, Luis Fernández. Because you let me write on your blog, but also because because it came up as the boat docked, under a blazing sun, to immortalize the memory. To portray "my" music.
