Rán Racing stay cool in the Miami heat to lift Gaastra 52 World Championship title

Niklas Zennström and the Rán Racing team secured the Gaastra 52 World Championship title on the final run of the last race of the series after a thrilling showdown off Miami’s South Beach up against 52 SUPER SERIES champions and former world champions Azzurra. 

Although Rán Racing started the three race finale with a lead of four points and increased that to six points after they placed second in the first contest of the day with Azzurra fourth, Zennström’s team then had what he later described as a ‘shocker’.
Early in the penultimate race they missed the key windshift and could only manage seventh as the Azzurra team sailed to a relatively comfortable win.

That left the pair tied on points going in to the final race. Head to head, the odds were perhaps stacked in favour of the Azzurra team with slightly more match racing experience.
Sure enough when the start gun went Azzurra had hounded Rán out to the extreme left side of the line, almost into the spectator fleet. But the Swedish owner and his crew kept cool heads and did a great job of damage limitation.

Azzurra retained control of Rán around the course but Zennström’s crew kept pushing and, in sixth and seventh place at the final top mark, the team which has lead the championship for longest were in a position to pounce.

As a small gust hit Azzurra appeared to broach and lose control allowing Rán to slide past only centimetres to windward. Reports as to what actually happened differ. Rán believe their rivals were trying to luff and force a penalty. Azzurra’s skipper Guillermo Parada later explained that it was a combination of small errors of timing which caused their costly broach.

Rán Racing’s coolness paid off and they held on to cross the line just ahead of Azzurra to clinch the title by one single point.
Owner Doug DeVos steered Quantum Racing to win the tenth and final race of the regatta, in so doing narrowing their points deficit in third place to finish only one point behind Azzurra and two off new world champions Rán Racing.
As was forecast at the beginning of the five day regatta, Miami dealt up a great range of different wind conditions and so Zennström and his team can be considered very worthy champions. They become the third team in the history of the event to win the world title after Quantum Racing. The tall Swedish owner-driver admitted later it was ‘one of the most stressful days of my life’.

“ It was a brilliant team effort from everyone in Rán Racing. We showed what we are made of. We kept fighting and came back from some tough positions. Coming out as world champions is just awesome. I love sailing here in Miami. We are only in early March in the season and we have won our first regatta of the year and it happens to be a world championship. We are ecstatic.”

Azzurra win the US 52 SUPER SERIES overall, the results aggregated between January’s Quantum Key West 2013 regatta and these Gaastra 52 World Championships where they finish runners-up.

We probably squandered our lead on the middle race when we missed out on the left shift and we did not really get back into the game. On the start of the last race Azzurra came looking for us and we tried to minimise the damage. We managed to close them down and were on their transom on the gate. They did not manage to put any distance on us on the beat so we were in contention down the run. We had a good set. The guys did an amazing Indian gybe set which put us in a strong position to roll them. They tried to luff and we kept clear and we sailed away. It was proper seat of the pants stuff. It was a brilliant team effort from everyone in Rán Racing. We showed what we are made of. We kept fighting and came back from some tough positions. Coming out as world champions is just awesome. I love sailing here in Miami. We are only in early March in the season and we have won our first regatta of the year and it happens to be a world championship. We are ecstatic.”

Guillermo Parada (ARG) skipper Azzurra (ITA); “It is sport. We would liked to have won but the final positions are what they are and are fair. Rán had a great week overall and are fair winners. We kept pushing as much as we could and got close. When you are not in your perfect week and you get into the fight for the title that is good. And we won the US 52 SUPER SERIES and are leading overall going to Europe. We have some homework to do but we are in good shape. It has not been an ideal week for us but we hung in there but congratulations to Rán, they sailed a great week and it was great fun.
We called for the manoeuvre a little bit late. It was a gybe set on the offset as we were hoisting the kite. We were a little bit late rotating the spinnaker, getting the tack in position and the backstay on and so we had people off the rail. We did have the back stay fully on and the tack of the spinnaker was a little too high and we were hit by a gust and we were not ready and so we broached. We were very close to Rán but they were able to squeeze to windward of us by centimetres. The 52 SUPER SERIES is in great health with eight boats here with very tight racing, boats on equal points and everything decided on the last race, you cannot ask for more than that.

Ed Reynolds (USA) project director Quantum Racing (USA): “It was great to just see how close these great boats are. And to see two great crews like Azzurra and Rán Racing, when everything is on the line and it is a battle all the way around. There is nothing like having your best race when it means the most and so my hat is off to Rán Racing for the job they did. It was amazing.
We are third for the event. We always look at the season and come out of the two Florida events 10 points off first. We are third overall and like where we are at. We would like to be leading but there are some things with the boat we are really excited about and are really looking forwards to the European legs of the 52 SUPER SERIES. A lot of it here was us not committing hard enough when we needed to. We thought we were going very well. But we probably took 60 % of the shifts when we needed 80%. And it is more difficult out there than people thought. And if you are going the wrong way more often than not, but when we went the right way we did well. It was great to finish with a win. There is nobody loves sailing more than Doug DeVos and we had hoped to do better for him, but finishing with a win was really good.”

Extreme Sailing Series. Acto 1º. "The Wave, Muscat" gana por la mínima

- El patrón del equipo campeón, Leigh McMillan, admite que no pensó que podría ganar el evento

- Decepción para Red Bull Sailing Team, que pierde el primer Acto en los últimos segundos de la última manga, tras permanecer líder durante dos días

- Alinghi sube al podio por primera vez desde 2011.

La última jornada de las Extreme Sailing Series en Muscat, Omán, repitió el patrón clásico en las Series: la victoria se decidió en la última manga de la última jornada en un día de brisas ligeras que contribuyó a incrementar la tensión en el campo de regatas. El defensor Leigh McMillan junto a su equipo The Wave, Muscat, llevó a cabo una jornada de libro en casa y remontó una diferencia de 15 puntos por detrás de Red Bull Sailing Team, para subirse a lo alto del podio en el final más ajustado.

Antes de cruzar la línea de salida de la última manga, que cuenta por doble puntuación, tan sólo dos puntos separaban a Red Bull Sailing Team de The Wave, Muscat, por lo que la ecuación era simple: quien consiguiera ponerse por delante, se llevaría el Acto. El equipo invitado, Team Duqm Oman, con el ganador de la primera edición de las Extreme Sailing Series en 2007 Robert Greenhalgh a la caña, ganó la manga, pero The Wave, Muscat consiguió asegurar la victoria tras una tensa batalla. “La semana ha sido agridulce, pero hoy ha sido un día excepcional. Así es el deporte. No se puede hacer las cosas bien siempre, pero hoy sí lo conseguimos, que era cuando realmente importaba. No sé si podremos repetir este rendimiento en todos los eventos. Ha sido todo un reto para el equipo así que me siento feliz por haber vivido una jornada como la de hoy”, comentó McMillan.

Red Bull Sailing Team ha sido uno de los equipos que ha mostrado una mayor forma esta semana y que ha demostrado un buen rendimiento en condiciones de viento muy diferentes, pero al final no pudo ser para el patrón y doble medallista de oro olímpico austriaco Roman Hagara:“Empezamos bien la última prueba, pero al final no pudimos igualar su velocidad y a partir de cierto punto no hubo forma de alcanzarlos. Esperamos mejorar en Singapur”.

Los suizos de Alinghi encadenaron un resultado sólido desde el comienzo del Acto y consiguieron subirse al tercer lugar del podio, algo que no ocurría desde 2011. Los datos estadísticos provistos por SAP muestran que Alinghi ha sido el equipo más rápido en el campo de regatas esta semana, a una velocidad de 8,54 nudos y si consiguen reducir la distancia recorrida en el campo de regatas, la victoria podría estar asegurada. “Ha sido una gran regata, con un gran equipo y la adición de Morgan Larson (patrón que llevó a Oman Air al segundo puesto en 2012) ha sido fantástica. Ernesto, Nis, Yves y yo estamos muy habituados a navegar juntos y nos entendemos bien y Morgan ha tomado buenas decisiones tácticas. El día no empezó muy bien, pero al final todo fue mucho mejor. Estamos encantados”, afirmó el trimmer Pierre-Yves Jorand.

Los nuevos equipos en la flota: Realteam, GAC Pindar y Team Korea han tenido momentos brillantes y habrá que estar atentos a su comportamiento a lo largo del año. Es todo un signo del nivel de la flota en esta edición de Extreme Sailing Series.

El próximo Acto tendrá lugar en Singapur del 11 al 14 de abril en el que participará un nuevo equipo invitado: Team Aberdeen Singapore. Las previsiones apuntan a vientos flojos, por lo que la tensión, tal y como ha sido el caso en Muscat, será la protagonista en el campo de regatas de Marina Bay Reservoir.

Rounding off a long day on the sun drenched waters off Miami’s South Beach with their fourth race win from seven starts, Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing lead the Gaastra 52 World Championships by four clear points going in to Saturday, the final racing day.

Competition has been brought forward by one hour to try and ensure three races form a suitable finale, taking full advantage of the forecasted brisk winds.
Zennström’s team were, again, the best scorers of the day with their 4,3,1 for the three windward-leeward contests which were sailed directly off South Beach in testing 7-12 knots winds.

With two different breezes fighting for supremacy, one offshore and one closer to the beach, the balance of power changed all the time through the afternoon but Rán Racing’s tactician Adrian Stead – already a past winner of the 52 world title – was on top of the game throughout.

The hallmark of a true world champion is as much their ability to climb through the fleet from a lowly early position and convert it to a useful score as the ability to win races. Rán Racing achieved that in the first race. Sixth at the top mark first time up, they were actually unfortunate to lose third to Quantum Racing in the final stages of the last run.

Rán’s fourth race win of the series came with a text book start which allowed them to gain early control of what proved to be the favoured right side of the course where the wind pressure was strongest.
Stead cautions firmly that there is still potentially 30% of the regatta left. Although they have four points in hand, their job is far from done, especially considering the winds are due to exceed 20kts:
“ We are achieving our goals of being in the top three each day for the day every day and so we go in to tomorrow with a very good chance along with Azzurra and Quantum.”
“ We made a couple of changes to the boat overnight which we are pleased with. I think tomorrow we will see different conditions again, slightly more wind pressure – three more races – that is still 30% of the regatta still to go.”
“ We are all taking our chances. But being able to dig yourselves out is important to convert a fifth to a third, a sixth to a fourth.”
“ If you feel strongly about something in this fleet you have to go for it and go out and win races.”
“We are pleased with how we are sailing. It is the best we have sailed since the Royal Cup last year, so hopefully we can round it off with a good day tomorrow.”
Both of Rán’s main rivals had one weighty score apiece today. Azzurra’s fifth – from the second race – and Quantum Racing’s sixth in the third race allowed Zennström’s team breathing space. Azzurra are four points adrift of Rán, whilst Doug DeVos’ Quantum Racing are now eight points off the lead.

The message from both Azzurra’s skipper Guillermo Parada, and Quantum Racing’s Ed Reynolds is that they need to come out Saturday and sail their own races, look for race wins and not be unnecessarily distracted by other boats.
Parada said: “I think we need to go out tomorrow and win races and forget about the other boats. We need to make points and go for wins.”
And Reynolds:
“ Our plan tomorrow is to come out and sail our own races. Hopefully we get all three races in. It is do-able. It’s a big, big gesture but I like our group.”
Race wins in this fleet are not exclusive to those lying in the top three overall. Jim Swartz’s experienced Vesper crew won the second race today following on from Tony Langley’s triumph in the first race.
Indeed Langley’s Gladiator looked to be on course for a great day after a third in the next race, but they had to take a penalty in the last heat which resulted in an eighth.

The first race we got ourselves back into it from a sixth or seventh we got the third. Quantum got us on the finish line which was tough, but then we got a 2,1 which was good. Last race we had a good feeling of what we wanted off the line. We got the right, apart from the breeze going light at the end it was good. We are very pleased with the day. Guillermo Parada (ARG), skipper Azzurra (ITA): “ It was a tricky day and I think the results show that the positions of the boats are changing in every race. We did not manage to get the results that we would have liked but we are still in second position and we have still three races to go and so we are looking to make it at least as far as we can with Rán. I think we need a little more detailing and have more of plan what we are doing on day like today. Trying to sail looking at the other boats is a little bit difficult and I think we need to go out tomorrow and win races and forget about the other boats. We need to make points and go for wins.”

Ed Reynolds USA, project director Quantum Racing (USA): “This is one of the tougher days we have had. Never say never but kudos to Rán Racing. Overall we don’t think of Rán as a boat which, when it gets lighter, it can just use its speed. They sailed incredibly well. They are all over it. Our plan tomorrow is to come out and sail our own races. Hopefully we get all three races in. It is do-able. It’s a big, big gesture but I like our group. We just seemed to on the outside of every shift on that last race. It was a little a frustrating because we have worked so hard on our downwind speed. Everybody on the boat is ecstatic that we are going so well. We have some of the best sailors in the world but they had a bad day.
There were two completely different breezes and there is a lot of timing in which side is going to come in strong. The left side just seems to suck you in. It looks positive, it looks positive and then it crashes and the right comes in strong up at the top. If you baled of the left hand shift early and could get across the pack before the right hander came in then you were in good shape. Our positioning off the starts did not give us the option to do that. We did not sail well.

Rán Racing on top of the worlds after three race wins in Miami

Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing are the new leaders of the Gasstra 52 World Championship after they won both of today’s races in great sailing conditions off Miami’s Key Biscayne. 

Rán Racing excelled in the stronger breezes, blowing from an offshore direction which brought some fast downwind runs in the puffy, gusty wind which peaked at 22kts in the first race and which eased down to 12-13kts at times in the second as a frontal system moved through.

From the four races sailed so far Rán Racing have won three in a row, whilst Day 1’s strong starters Azzurra did not manage to replicate their same top scoring consistency today. Although they lead early in the first race they were overhauled by Rán Racing and Interlodge on the first run.

At the first leeward mark the reigning 52 SUPER SERIES champions had to take a penalty for infringing Interlodge but they did fight back for a useful third. Then in the second race Azzurra faded to a fifth, their worst score of the regatta so far, which dropped them to second overall, one point behind the new leaders.

Doug DeVos’ Quantum Racing also made points against Azzurra thanks to their solid second and third for the day, holding third overall. But only three points separate Rán Racing from Quantum Racing at the top of the eight boat fleet.

Both races held their own special challenges but Rán Racing’s tactician Adrian Stead was able to stay on top of the changes. They started cleanly in both races and were able to make the key gain at the first leeward gate.

They sailed smartly on the first downwind on the second race when they made big gains against their key rivals when they held patiently out to the right to outstrip Quantum Racing and Azzurra by some distance. Jim Swartz’s Vesper team scored a good second place in that race.

The first two days have followed the expected pattern of different wind conditions each day and further change is anticipated. After a light winds opener, today’s puffy, stronger breezes are expected to be followed Thursday with a light to moderate NW’ly, blowing almost directly off the beach. Rán’s Stead comments:

“What’s nice is that tomorrow is going to be something different again. We identified at the start of the week that every day is going to be different and it is being able to perform equally well each and every day that will be key.”

“ I am pleased we have won three races on the trot and in that first race we left quite a lot out there on the race track. And now we are back in the running for the worlds and that feels good.”

“ From here we just keep chipping away. We are only four races in to an 11 race series, but today has shown that Quantum Racing and us have come through, we have pulled back some points on Azzurra who had a blinding first day.”

It was pre-frontal with a little bit of cloud action so it was shifty but there was kind of a pattern to it. We had two good starts and so were able to be in the front row off the line both times. The lines were quite short and so it was not easy for all eight boats to get lined up. It seemed OK for us, we were pleased to be in contention at the top marks each time and the guys did a good job on the sets.
Today we were doing the dictating rather than being dictated to as it was in the first race yesterday. It is a good feeling. I am pleased we have won three races on the trot and in that first race we left quite a lot out there on the race track. And now we are back in the running for the worlds and that feels good.

Andy Horton (USA), strategist Quantum Racing (USA): “We did not have the best first beat in the first race so that was a big fight back in that, we got a little pinned out there. We thought the breeze was a little more balanced but finally there was a big left shift that came in. We had a great run and came back to second. The second race we lead at the top mark but there was some clouds clearing out and you had to pick a side at the top and we went for the gybe set and unfortunately the guys that held on got the shift ended up gaining a bit.
We are figuring it out. We are starting to put the pieces together a bit now but it is not easy, putting it all together, the sails, the trimming the new keel, we are starting to feel more confident and comfortable.”

Simon Fry (GBR), trimmer Azzurra (ITA): “It is tough out there. We did not sail particularly well but neither did we sail particularly badly. We lead at the top mark in the first race but there was a big puff and the fleet got down inside us. And then at the bottom mark we had to do a penalty. To be fair we did well to get back into that race. In the second race things did not break our way. We had a half decent start and then ourselves and Quantum gybe set at the top mark but Rán and Vesper just took a lot out of us. They were 200 meters ahead at the bottom gate. La unión hace la fuerza...

Varios clubs de Málaga y Cadiz se unen para organizar regatas conjuntas.

Solaparse dos regatas el mismo día en la misma zona exaspera a patrones y tripulaciones de la ya de por si menguada flota de Cruceros. Para evitar esa situación, nos llegan noticias de que al menos dos zonas en el Mediterráneo, las bahías de Málaga y Cádiz, han unido sus esfuerzos para crear calendarios conjuntos.

¿Será una fórmula que tendrán que adoptar otros clubs?

Feliz cumpleaños, A-71!! ("Juan Sebastián de Elcano" )

Tal día como hoy en 1927, se celebró la botadura del Buque Escuela "Juan Sebastián de Elcano" en el Astillero de Cádiz, por aquel entonces denominado "Astillero Echevarrieta y Larrinaga".

La construcción de buque fue autorizada por Real Decreto de 17 de Abril de 1925.
El 21 de Noviembre de ese año se puso la quilla del "Minerva", ya que ese era el nombre inicialmente elegido para el buque y la diosa que figura en su mascarón de proa. El acto fue presidido por el general Primo de Rivera. Fue ese día, durante su breve discurso, cuando el propio Horacio Echevarrieta propuso que se le cambiara el nombre por el de "Juan Sebastián de Elcano". Denominación que fue aceptada oficialmente en el Consejo de Ministros celebrado el 13 de Diciembre de 1925.
Los planos técnicos los proporcionó la casa inglesa Camper & Nicholson de Southampton. Para el diseño de las velas se escogió igualmente al proyectista ingles Nicholson y el velamen que era de lino, se encargó a la fábrica Ratsey Isapthone de Gosport, mientras que las velas de respeto serían encargadas a D. Victoriano Echame de Gijón.
El 5 de Marzo de 1927 se celebró finalmente su botadura. Al acto asistieron, además de la madrina María del Carmen Primo de Rivera, gran cantidad de altos cargos civiles y militares.

La Armada Española define en su web el cometido del buque:
La misión principal del Buque Escuela "Juan Sebastián de Elcano" es la de mantener a los Guardias Marinas de los diferentes Cuerpos de la Armada, que se encuentran en el 4° curso de su carrera en la ENM, en íntimo y prolongado contacto con la mar, donde están llamados a desempeñar su trabajo en los años venideros.

El A-71, perteneciente a la Sail Training Association, ha ganado ocho veces la Boston Teapot, por ser el velero en navegar la mayor distancia en 124 horas; la última vez en 2006.

86 años después, el "Juan Sebastián de Elcano" sigue siendo un magnífico buque y un pilar fundamental en la formación de los oficiales de la Armada Española.

VOR, finalizando los primeros barcos

El proyecto Volvo Ocean 65 marcará un hito en los próximos días: el primer casco y la primera cubierta se transportarán desde los astilleros de Persico (Italia) y Multiplast (Francia), respectivamente, para su semblaje en Green Marine (Gran Bretaña).

El primer casco se está embalando para transportarlo en un trailer desde Persico hasta la ciudad italiana de Bérgamo, desde donde un camión Volvo lo remolcará hasta la costa del sur de Inglaterra, un recorrido de más de 2.000 kilómetros.

“Vamos a escoltar el convoy”, declaró Rick Deppe, de Volvo Ocean Race, que supervisa el rodaje del proyecto de construcción del Volvo Ocean 65. “Viajará rumbo al este cruzando Italia hasta Austria y después a Alemania. Después se dirigirá a Holanda".

"A finales de la semana siguiente cogeremos un ferry desde Hook en Holanda hasta Harwich en Gran Bretaña. El plan es llegar a Green Marine el 13 ó 14 de marzo”, añadió.

Mientras tanto, en Francia, la cubierta se ha terminado y pintado en Multiplast y pronto se enviará a Inglaterra.

“La cubierta número uno sadrá de Multiplast, en Vannes, el día 11 de marzo”, señaló Rick. “Por supuesto será un viaje más corto. Un camión Volvo también lo remolcará".

“Las dos partes llegarán con 24 ó 48 horas de diferencia. Las dos se colocarán en una nave y ¡un ejército de técnicos empezarán a trepar por encima!”.

Extreme Sailing Series. Acto 1º

Puro espectáculo en la primera jornada de Extreme Sailing Series™ en Muscat, Omán

Las condiciones no podían haber sido mejores en la primera jornada de Extreme Sailing Series 2013 en The Wave, Muscat (Omán). Un primer día que ha supuesto todo un bautismo de fuego para los nuevos equipos en el campo de regatas. Tras conseguir la primera victoria de la jornada, Leigh McMillan, a bordo de su equipo The Wave, Muscat, se coloca en lo más alto de la clasificación provisional. Con una flota de tripulaciones nuevas y otras más experimentadas, la temporada que se presenta excitante y como una de las más impredecibles en la historia de las Series.

Roman Hagara y sus hombres de Red Bull Sailing Team consiguieron dos victorias en el día y se colocan a apenas un punto por detrás de The Wave, Muscat. Hagara, dejó claro en la rueda de prensa celebrada con todos los patrones por la mañana que este año sólo se conformarían con el podio: “Hoy ha sido perfecto. Las condiciones han sido buenas, el control del barco también y el equipo ha hecho un buen trabajo en el campo de regatas. Lo más difícil ahora será permanecer en lo más alto del podio”.

El que fuera patrón de Oman Air el año pasado, Morgan Larson, es esta temporada el táctico de Alinghi, con Ernesto Bertarelli como patrón. A pesar de algunos problemas con el espí, la tripulación suiza consiguió terminar la jornada en tercer lugar. Al final de la jornada Larson describía a su nuevo equipo como “una tripulación experimentada que lleva navegando junta desde hace tiempo y no necesita hablar, sólo navegar el barco. La parte más dura del trabajo para mí será probablemente encajar en la ecuación. El nivel de la flota es excelente. Hay nuevas caras entre los equipos que vienen con fuerza así que la competición será de primer nivel.”

Robert Greenhalgh demostró que no ha perdido un ápice de su valía como patrón a bordo de Team Duqm Oman, la tripulación invitada en Muscat. Greenhalgh, ganador de la primera edición de la historia de Extreme Sailing Series, consiguió empatar a puntos con Ainghi.

Realteam, nuevo equipo suizo esta temporada, disfrutó de las excelentes condiciones y su patrón Jérome Clerc, campeón del circuito D35 del lago Lemán (Suiza), mostró sus cualidades ganadoras haciéndose con el primer puesto en la segunda manga.

William Tiller, también hizo su debut como patrón a bordo de GAC Pindar y a pesar de que tiene experiencia en multicascos por la Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, hoy fue su primera experiencia real a bordo de un Extreme 40. “Estos barcos son fantásticos y con el viento de hoy hemos vivido una jornada magnífica. Mañana nos centraremos en sentirnos más cómodos a bordo. Nuestra experiencia a bordo de un Extreme 40 se reduce a una semana así que en este evento mejoraremos todo lo que podamos”. Team Korea, otra de las tripulaciones nuevas para 2013 con el medallista de plata olímpico Peter Burling como patrón, aprendió rápidamente lo duras que son las condiciones y la competición con el resto de la flota, terminando en octava posición.

Es demasiado pronto para adivinar quién se subirá a lo más alto del podio en Muscat y mañana el formato de regata cambia para convertirse en “Formato Estadio”, del que las Extreme Sailing Series son pioneros. Toda la acción puede seguirse en directo en la página web desde las 1300 hora española.

Bomberos de Bilbao celebra la fiesta de su Patrón

Hoy se ha celebrado en la base de Bomberos de Bilbao la fiesta de San Juan de Dios con una jornada de puertas abiertas. 

San Juan de Dios fue elegido patrón del Cuerpo de Bomberos en el año 1953 en reconocimiento de su gesta, en la que el santo se lanzó en medio de las llamas y salvó enfermos en el incendio del Hospital de Granada a mediados del siglo XVI.

Hinchables, Gargantua, tirolinas, paseos en camión, uniformes, globos, etc para diversión de pequeños y mayores.

El equipo neozelandés ya navega el segundo AC72, el MKII

El pasado 6 de febrero, y bajo la atenta mirada de las personalidades más importantes de la vela neozelandesa así como de diseñadores e ingenieros, el equipo dirigido por el incombustible Grant Dalton y capitaneado por Dean Barker - el Emirates Team New Zealand-  presentó la segunda y definitiva versión del AC72, el denominado MKII con el que los kiwis competirán en la última fase de la America´s cup.

El segundo catamarán salió por primera vez a navegar a primeros de mes por aguas de Auckland (Nueva Zelanda). Por su parte, el equipo se ha mostrado satisfecho con las mejoras, al tiempo que seguirá con su programa de entrenamiento, tanto en el mar como en el gimnasio.

El Emirates Team New Zealand contará con dos meses de preparación en los que el equipo deberá adaptarse a las nuevas características del catamarán sacando el mejor rendimiento de esta pieza única. Finalizado  el periodo de prueba, el nuevo AC72 será enviado a San Francisco en donde se reencontrará con sus tripulantes para disputar la Louis Vuitton Cup que comenzará el 4 de Julio en la mítica Bahía de San Francisco, bajo el puente Golden Gate. 

Finalizada la ceremonia de presentación del nuevo barco, Grant Dalton -CEO del Emirates Team New Zealand- comentaba “La realidad ahora es que sólo tenemos cinco meses para prepararnos con vistas a competir en la Louis Vuitton Cup. Sin embargo, antes de eso, el equipo tendrá que enfrentarse a otros dos meses de intensas pruebas con el nuevo barco en la Bahía de Auckland. A finales de abril acabaremos con el testing del nuevo barco y nos dispondremos a embalarlo todo para el traslado a la Bahía de San Francisco”.

La última prueba de las America’s Cup World Series tendrá lugar el próximo mes de abril entre los días 16 y 21 en Nápoles (Italia).

Un patrocinio relevante que marca un nuevo hito para España

Tras los éxitos cosechados en la pasada edición de la Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 con el CAMPER con Emirates Team New Zealand (subcampeón del trofeo), la marca española de zapatos Camper ha prestado su patrocinio y su apoyo al Emirates Team New Zealand en el proyecto de la America´s Cup apostando así, y una vez más, por la vela de alta competición.

Iker Martínez vuelve a las clases olímpicas

Iker Martínez e Iago López, junto a Carlos Robles y Dani Codina, participarán en Cádiz en el Campeonato de España 

Por partida doble. Así será la representación de Movistar en la Semana Olímpica Andaluza, cita que acoge el Campeonato de España de 49er y que supondrá la vuelta de Iker Martínez –en esta ocasión junto a Iago López- a las clases olímpicas. Además, Carlos Robles y Dani Codina se enfrentan a su primera gran regata con los “gallos” de la clase 49er, como ellos mismos afirman.
Un máximo de 16 pruebas -que se celebrarán entre mañana jueves, día 28 de febrero, y el domingo día 3 de marzo en la bahía de Cádiz- serán las encargadas de decidir al nuevo campeón de España de 49er. No será hasta mañana jueves a partir de las 13:00 horas cuando se escuche el bocinazo de salida de la prueba inaugural.

Hace medio año Iker Martínez se subía al 49er para disputar los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012 y ahora, en la bahía de Cádiz, vuelve a la acción, en esta ocasión con Iago López como tripulante. El campeón olímpico llega al Campeonato de España con la intención de entrenar y probar en qué estado de forma se encuentra de cara a definir su futuro deportivo dentro de las clases olímpicas, ya sea en ésta u otras.

Para el joven tándem Movistar, ésta es su segunda regata de alto nivel a bordo del 49er, por lo que el objetivo es uno: continuar con su preparación preolímpica aprendiendo de los grandes de la clase y es que Robles no pasa por alto que en aguas de la bahía de Cádiz estarán los mejores: “Parece que el nivel será bastante alto con el equipo francés y regatistas españoles increíbles. Para nosotros poder navegar con estos ‘gallos’ será una gran experiencia. Nunca hemos regateado con gente de tanto nivel y es algo que realmente nos apetece: poder ver cómo navegan y poder competir contra ellos será muy positivo y nos atrae muchísimo”.
Robles y Codina mantienen los pies en la tierra en los inicios de su campaña preolímpica y prefieren mostrar cautela ante la cita nacional de 49er ya que, como explicaba el patrón 49er “Movistar”: “Sabemos que va ser muy complicado, especialmente con condiciones de vientos medios ya que aún nos falta peso y experiencia, aunque creemos que podremos dar alguna sorpresa especialmente con poco viento”. Afortunadamente para el tándem Movistar, el campo de regatas gaditano no les resulta extraño, al menos para Codina, y por eso pueden afirmar que será “un lugar complicado, con mar de fondo y ola corta que no va a poner las cosas fáciles, pero estos días previos hemos estado entrenando y cada vez estamos más cómodos. Cada día va a mejor” explicaba Robles.
Lo cierto es que los jóvenes regatistas Movistar se han preparado a fondo para esta prueba y durante los últimos meses se han preparado a conciencia con su 49er para lograr el máximo dominio posible del barco ya que, como recalcaba Robles: “Hemos estado trabajando solos bastante, especialmente en temas de maniobras. Tener el 49er dominado no es fácil y por eso nos hemos dedicado a hacer muchas maniobras y ponernos bien físicamente ya que el 49er es muy exigente… ¡Y cómo no, comer mucho! Que aún nos faltan unos kilillos... Pero muy bien, ¡contentos y con ganas de empezar el campeonato”.

Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Ya se conocen los cinco equipos clasificados

Ya se conocen los cinco equipos pertenecientes a otras tantas naciones que competirán en la "Red Bull Youth America’s Cup" que tendrá lugar del 1 al 4 de septiembre de 2013 en la bahía de San
Francisco, en plena temporada de regatas de la 34 America’s Cup a bordo de los AC45 los mismos catamaranes de alto rendimiento de vela rígida que se utilizan en la America’s Cup World Series.
Por primera vez en la historia de la America’s Cup, regatistas jóvenes y talentosos cuentan con la posibilidad de competir en uno de los más prestigiosos trofeos del deporte.

Doce equipos han demostrado ante el Comité de Selección que contaban con el talento y los fondos para hacerlo y se han presentado del 9 al 24 de febrero de 2013 a los seminarios de entrenamiento y regatas de selección y son cinco los que se han logrado clasificar:  Nueva Zelanda, Suiza, Alemania, Australia y Portugal.

Las series preliminares contaron con los equipos de Australia, Austria, Dinamarca, Alemania, Nueva Zelanda y Sudáfrica para la primera confrontación del 9 al 15 de febrero y en la segunda tanda (18 al 24) compitieron Argentina, Gran Bretaña, Italia, Nueva Zelanda, Portugal y Suiza.

A estos hay que añadir los que están apoyados por equipos de Copa América: China, Francia , Nueva Zelanda, Suecia, USA – ORACLE TEAM USA/American Youth Sailing Force (SFO), USA – ORACLE TEAM USA/USA45 (USA)

Quién dijo miedo?? Casi una quincena de Cruceros en el "Trofeo Sargantana"

La mañana apareció con "boina" en el Serantes, pero no era negra de nubes, era de un inmaculado blanco manto de nieve, al igual que el resto de montañas que rodean Bilbao. Auténtico día de quedarse en casita, al calor de la chimenea y con una buena copa en la mano, pero a pesar de ello, casi una quincena de barcos acudieron este domingo a la convocatoria de Higarillo para disputar el "1er Trofeo Sargantana" en aguas del Abra. 

Una pequeña calma entre tanto temporal encadenado sorprendió a todos esa mañana, pero solo fue de viento, que el frío seguía siendo intenso y las gotas de lluvia daban paso a copos de nieve o incluso granizo durante toda la mañana.

La presión de viento era prácticamente cero, y cuando saltaba alguna racha, había que adivinar de que cuadrante llegaba. Casi a la hora de la salida, que se efectuó desde el Abra interior, escasos 4-6 nudos rolando del sureste al noroeste a escasos segundos de la largada, pillando con la maniobra cambiada a los que apostaban por salir con espi. Los dos teóricamente más rápidos, los JOD35 "Gaitero" y "Kantarepe Iru" toman bordadas diferentes, saliendo beneficiado el de casco azul ("Kantarepe Iru") y llegando en primer lugar a bordear el faro del morro, con "Gaitero" que se queda un rato "boyado" en la corriente de la Ría... pero la regata no había hecho más que comenzar... 

Los demás "aprietan" por detrás, con buenas salidas del "Nautis", "Emilu" y "Katxiporreta" y el "Sandra" remontando. Nuevo role y caída de viento llegando a San Ignacio que divide la flota, con verdaderos problemas para algunos para tomar dicha boya ( "Kantarepe Iru" rompe en la trasluchada la uña del tangón justo en el momento que el viento vuelve a desaparecer y tarda una eternidad en tomar dicha boya). 

Suplicio para llegar a la siguiente boya, la de la ampliación, por los roles continuos de un lado a otro y la casi ausencia de viento (el Comité, a la vista de como evolucionaba el viento y la regata, ya había anunciado un recorte en el recorrido).

A partir de ahí parece que el viento se anima un poco, con un "Gaitero" destacado, seguido por el "Nautis", "Sandra", "Marmotinha", "Katxiporreta" y un retrasado "Kantarepe Iru" que comienza la remontada tras la avería del tangón.

Vuelta hacia San Ignacio, tomar la boya que conformaba la salida, otra vez S. Ignacio y finalizar en el Puerto de Santurce. El viento sigue jugando de las suyas, y el que mejor pudo aprovechar la más mínima racha (si es que le llegaba) y adivinar el role iba remontando sobre la lenta flota, cosa que aprovechó el "Kantarepe Iru" para llegar a escasos segundos del sorprendente "Nautis" vencedor en la clase "B" y de la general, pero lejos del siempre efectivo "Gaitero" ganador en tiempo real y de la clase "A", a pesar que en esta regata iba con tripulación muy reducida.

En el edificio de Capitanía del puerto santurzarra nos esperaba una buena cazuela de patatas a la riojana  para calentar el estómago, cañin de cerveza, un buen vino de rioja, chocolate caliente, bizcochos y churros, todo ello por iniciativa de Higarillo y de su junta, socios y como no, de su presidente, Josu. El evento finalizó con la entrega de trofeos y unas emotivas palabras de agradecimiento a los asistentes de Vanessa, la hija del homenajeado.

Regata familiar, pero competitiva, y al final nadie se acordaba del mal tiempo, si de lo bien que nos lo pasamos.

J80. José María Van der Ploeg lidera ranking de la Asociación Española de la clase

"Great Sailing" lidera el ranking 2011-2012 de la Asociación Española de J80

El J80 "Great Sailing" patroneado per José María Van der Ploeg, actual campeón del mundo de la clase y medalla de oro en Barcelona’92, lidera, al cierre de la campaña 2012, el ranking de la Asociación Española de la clase J80 gracias a encadenar excelentes resultados en regatas y campeonatos puntuables para dicho ranking, tales como: Palmavela, la Copa de España, el Campeonato de España y el Campeonato del Mundo.

El patrón del Great Sailing ha declarado que “es una gran satisfacción estar al frente de este ranking de J80 durante el 2013” y añade que “desde que llegamos a la clase, en marzo del 2011, hasta el día de hoy, todo mi equipo hemos hecho un gran trabajo, manteniendo un nivel excepcional durante dos temporadas. La clase j80 es muy competitiva donde hay un numeroso grupo de grandes regatistas, que al navegar en monotipos (barcos todos iguales) se hace muy importante la regularidad, obviamente mis años navegando en clases olímpicas numerosas como son el Finn y el Star han contribuido en gran medida a que me encuentre muy cómodo en esta clase”. No han faltado palabras de agradecimiento “a mis tripulantes su excelente trabajo donde hay una parte muy importante de este resultado, mi agradecimiento mas sincero para: Javier Goizueta, Iñaki Olariaga, Fernando Velarde, Maria Bover, Jesus Quirze, Juan Ignacio Merayo, Lluis Mas, Hugo Ramon, Pol Chapon y mi hijo Jose Maria” y también “a mis patrocinadores, por su apoyo, gracias: Factor Energia, Nilfisk, Banks Sails, Gaastra, Sinera y Camper; y a mi Club Náutico El Balís por su apoyo incondicional”. En cuanto al futuro, Van der Ploeg explica que “en breve iniciaremos nuestra temporada 2013, que se plantea difícil, donde trabajaremos duro para hacer una buena temporada pero principalmente para llegar a punto al campeonato Europeo del 2014 que se celebrara en mi club."

En el mes de abril de 2012 llegó el tercer puesto en el Palmavela, después de ganar el Princesa Sofía. En el mes de mayo, Van der Ploeg se proclamó Campeón de Catalunya durante la celebración de la MedSailing en El Balís y vencedor del Trofeo Conde de Godó en Barcelona. En el mes de junio consiguió la plata de la Copa de España; unas semanas después llegaba el título de Campeones del Mundo en Darmouth. En el mes de septiembre se celebró la última regata del circuito nacional, el Campeonato de España en la que José María Van der Ploeg consiguió el bronce.

Así pues, tan solo dos años después de embarcarse en la aventura de los Monotipos J80, José María Van der Ploeg lidera un ranking con un alto nivel de competitividad a nivel nacional e internacional, que cuenta con grandes especialistas del J80 donde España es campeona del mundo desde el año 2007.

Conferencia en el RCN de El Puerto de Santa María

Como acto preliminar a la celebración de la 3.ª regata de la I Liga de Crucero Bahía de Cádiz, REGATA RON DOS MADERAS, que organizará este Real Club Náutico, el día 9 de marzo.  Se ofrecerá en nuestras instalaciones una conferencia titulada: TRIMADOS Y TECNOLOGÍA PUNTA EN LA FABRICACIÓN DE VELAS 3DL Y 3Di, cuyo cartel-anunciador les remitimos, la cual será impartida por TONI TIÓ,  LUIS MARTÍNEZ DORESTE Y ÁNGEL MEDINA, como sabrán, todos ellos son figuras de reconocido prestigio y relevancia dentro del mundo de la vela.
